چکیده

Background An internal pilot study is the first part of a substantive RCT where trial parameters are examined and data contribute to the final analyses. This two-phase design provides an opportunity to review pre-agreed ‘progression criteria’ that determine whether the internal pilot should continue into the main trial. Selecting appropriate criteria is critical but little is known about this area. Key issues in selecting progression criteria when designing RCTs with an internal pilot phase are considered.

Informing efficient randomised controlled trials: exploration of challenges in developing progression criteria for internal pilot studies

OBJECTIVES Designing studies with an internal pilot phase may optimise the use of pilot work to inform more efficient randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Careful selection of preagreed decision or 'progression' criteria at the juncture between the internal pilot and main trial phases provides a valuable opportunity to evaluate the likely success of the main trial and optimise its design or, if...

Optimising the design and evaluation of pilot work to inform the main trial: a review of current evidence and consideration of future practices

Methods PubMed was searched for articles with ‘pilot studies’ in the title (inception-03/04/2013). Relevant papers and reference lists were reviewed to identify and refine definitions of different types of pilot work. Definitions informed structured searches of the top 10 medical journals and the journal ‘Trials’ to identify different types of pilot work and how, if done well, they might inform...

Are pilot trials useful for predicting randomisation and attrition rates in definitive studies: A review of publicly funded trials.

BACKGROUND/AIMS External pilot trials are recommended for testing the feasibility of main or confirmatory trials. However, there is little evidence that progress in external pilot trials actually predicts randomisation and attrition rates in the main trial. To assess the use of external pilot trials in trial design, we compared randomisation and attrition rates in publicly funded randomised con...

Quality of reporting of pilot and feasibility cluster randomised trials: a systematic review

OBJECTIVES To systematically review the quality of reporting of pilot and feasibility of cluster randomised trials (CRTs). In particular, to assess (1) the number of pilot CRTs conducted between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2014, (2) whether objectives and methods are appropriate and (3) reporting quality. METHODS We searched PubMed (2011-2014) for CRTs with 'pilot' or 'feasibility' in the ...

Sample size requirements for pilot randomised controlled trials with binary outcomes: a simulation study

Aims There is lack of consensus over what sample size should be used for pilot trials to inform the design of definitive randomised controlled trials. The majority of the existing recommendations focus on estimating the variation of a continuous outcome and relatively little attention is paid to binary outcomes. The aim of this research was to investigate the sample size required to precisely e...
